Electrophoretic properties of spores of Aspergillus niger.

چکیده
This report concerns an investigation of an important aspect of fungal growth, the nature of the spore surface. The spore is the propagative body of the fungus so a knowledge of its germination process is of primary importance. The surface of the spore necessarily plays an integral part in this process since it is the first point of contact between the spore and such factors as water, food, and poison. It is obvious then that the nature of the spore surface should be a subject of intense study if better control measures are to be realized. The organism chosen for this study was Aspergillus niger since it grows on a variety of substrates and much is known of its physiology. The technique of microelectrophoresis was used to determine the natuire of the spore surface. Electrophoresis has been used in studies of bacterial spores (Moyer, 1936; Dyar, 1948; Barry and James, 1952; to name a few), but its application to the study of fungus spores has been limited (Douglas, Collins, and Parkinson, 1959).

Effects of Junlon and Hostacerin on the Electrokinetic Properties of Spores of Aspergillus niger
The electrophoretic behaviour of freshly harvested spores of Aspergillus niger, Phanerochaete chrysosporium and Geotrichum candidum was determined in solution at various pH values. Freshly harvested spores of all three species lacked positive mobility at low pH values, suggesting a preponderance of acidic surface groups. Spores of the ‘non-aggregating’ fungus, G. candidum, had a pH-mobility cur...

Contamination of pistachio nuts by aflatoxigenic strains of Aspergillus species is the greatest constraint to production and export of pistachio nuts in Iran, the leading producer of pistachio nuts in the world. Kerman province is the main region in Iran where 85%, of pistachio nuts are produced. Determining the population density of Aspergillus spores in the orchards and terminals which are th...
متن کاملAn antibody-sensitized microfabricated cantilever for the growth detection of Aspergillus niger spores.
We demonstrate a new sensitive biosensor for detection of vital fungal spores of Aspergillus niger. The biosensor is based on silicon microfabricated cantilever arrays operated in dynamic mode. The change in resonance frequency of the sensor is a function of mass binding to the cantilever surface. For specific A. niger spore immobilization on the cantilever, each cantilever was individually coa...
متن کاملLinking aggregation of Aspergillus niger spores to surface electrostatics: a theoretical approach.
The effect of medium pH on conidial aggregation during submerged cultivation of Aspergillus niger is considered to originate from the electrostatic surface properties of the spores. As previously shown, these properties are greatly influenced by the presence of a melanin-containing surface coating covering the outer spore wall layer. The present study was designed to elucidate the impact of suc...
